A local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol has been named the organization’s best squadron among more than 1,500 squadrons nationwide.
The Albuquerque Heights Spirit Composite Squadron, led by Maj. Mike Eckert, received the Squadron of Distinction Award at the organization’s annual conference in Denver earlier this month.
The Civil Air Patrol is a congressionally chartered, federally supported nonprofit that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Its three missions are emergency services, cadet programs and aerospace education.
The squadron was recognized for its community service, such as its cadets’ involvement in Wreaths Across America, a project that honors veterans by laying wreaths at their graves each December. The squadron also increased its membership by 26 percent last year.
Eckert received the organization’s F. Ward Reilly Leadership Award.
